Using the Do Not Call Registry to Prevent Telemarketers From Calling You

The FTC has urged consumers to opt out of receiving telemarketing calls from telemarketers by placing their cell phone numbers on the National DO NOT CALL Registry. This registry is not a government database; it is a private website. And while the government does not release cell phone numbers to telemarketers, the use of automated dialers by telemarketers is still prohibited by FTC rules. This means that cell phone numbers will not be included in the Do Not Call Registry.

Using the National Do Not Call Registry will help telemarketers stop making unsolicited calls to you. However, there are limitations to this program. For example, calls from political organizations, charity groups, surveyors, and other companies with which you have a business relationship are still allowed. Therefore, registering your cell phone with the Do Not Disturbing Telephone Number Registry is not a foolproof way to prevent telemarketers from calling you.

The Do Not Call Registry will not prevent telemarketers from calling you, but it will ensure that they do not make any calls to you. While most telemarketers will stop making calls to consumers who have signed up, there are some exceptions. For instance, political groups, nonprofit organizations, and polling firms are exempt from being on the Registry. Newspapers are also exempt from the law, although federal law does require them to comply.
